Sealing washers of the Z type form efficient labyrinth seals which can be used in a wide variety of applications. They provide inexpensive solutions to many sealing problems. Their use is recommended in the first instance for simple bearing arrangements subjected to arduous operating conditions.

There are two types of sealing washer: the standard design and the flocked design which is intended for difficult operating conditions. Depending on the degree of contamination and the desired relubrication interval, up to four sets of sealing washers may be mounted immediately adjacent to each other. The sealing washers may also be combined with other standard seals.

Sealing washers, F design
The shaft washer of a set of F-design sealing washers has an additional thin flocked plastic washer.
The flocked sealing washers are superior to the standard washers as regards efficiency in the following cases:

• In surroundings which are unfavourable for rolling bearings, particularly where material containing abrasive particles such as sand, soil, cement etc. is handled.
• Where, because of wet and dirty surroundings, grease-filled bearings fitted with rubbing seals are used, the rubber lips of which require protection against abrasive particles.
• Where limited space prohibits the use of a number of standard sets.
• Where operating conditions, e.g. speed or temperature, are such that grease cannot be retained between the standard sealing washers.
