In addition to the standard pre-drilled design (disc wheel) and the version with a bore hole, key way and threaded hole, sprockets for roller chains are also available in a clamping bush design (also known as taper or taperlock). These sprockets are generally available in simplex, duplex and triplex versions, with any inside dimension and in accordance with the BS and ANSI and ASA standards.

The clamping bush variant is equipped as standard with a conical bore and threaded holes to fasten the bush to the shaft. The associated taperlock bushes are available with bore holes in varying sizes and key ways in metric and imperial sizes; the matching (socket head) screws also come with the bushes. The major advantages with using a clamping bush lie in the fact that the pulley and shaft do not have to be modified beforehand and that assembly and disassembly are very simple.

Sprocket and sprocket assemblies come in both standard and customised versions.

Choosing a specific design or quality depends on the application and the environmental conditions. If the drive needs to fulfil conveying purposes, the product being conveyed as well as the weight of the sprockets are also a key factor. For environments in which the drive is exposed to moisture, sprockets can have a special surface treatment and can be supplied in stainless steel or plastic.

Chain drives are primarily used in naval applications, in the agricultural and forestry sector, in the foodstuffs and drug industries and in mechanical engineering.

Important standards for chain drives: ISO 1977, ISO 606, ISO 1275, DIN 8167, DIN 8181, DIN 8188, DIN 8187 and BS 228.
