An X-ring, also referred to as a Quad ring is what is known as a four-lip seal. In other words, they have at least four sealing surfaces when installed. X-rings are designed to replace an O-ring in those instances where the latter has been performing less well. One example of this might be a dynamic application. The scope for X-rings is very large, not only from the point of view of design, but also due to availability in various elastomers. X-rings are available in the same sizes as the O-rings in the American size according to standard AS 568A. Other sizes are also available on request.
The benefits of an X-ring are that you need less force to press in the X-ring. This allows friction and therefore wear to be reduced with dynamic seals. The four sealing lips increase the sealing capacity and also form a lubricating groove that is extremely favourable for dynamic seals. The main advantage is that an X-ring has high stability in a dynamic application (particularly in the case of sliding seals). The service life and reliability of your seal are thus significantly improved.
Standard X-rings are available in the compounds NBR, FKM and EPDM.
