O-ring cords

O-ring cords, also known as round cords or precision cords, are the perfect solution when you quickly need a new O-ring made exactly to size. If you have an O-ring cord available, you can construct a new O-ring in next to no time. If you can delay replacing your O-ring for a while, your best course of action in most cases is to choose a normal O-ring or a Vulc-O-ring. These O-rings are more flexible and stronger.

O-ring cord materials

Our range includes precision cords made from different materials. It is important to ensure that the material used for your O-ring cord is suitable for the conditions under which it will be used. So always give careful consideration to the medium, the temperature, the pressure and the uptime. All the popular materials and their properties are summarised below.

  • O-ring cords made from NBR

Most round cords are made from NBR, i.e. nitrile. This rubber material is ideal for sealing lubricating oils or hydraulic oils. However, it is not very resistant to UV radiation, ageing and high temperatures (above +115°C).

  • O-ring cords made from EPDM

EPDM is also often used to produce precision cords. This material is well adapted to various solvents, hot water and steam. Most EPDM round cords have a temperature range of -50°C to +120°C. These products are also resistant to UV radiation and ageing.

  • O-ring cords made from FKM

For applications that involve extremely high temperatures, an FKM O-ring cord, commonly referred to by the brand name Viton, is a good solution. This material is capable of withstanding temperatures up to +200°C. Furthermore, these rubber round cords are resistant to many strong acids and bases, but not to hot water or steam. They often also no longer work effectively at low temperatures (-20°C or lower).

  • O-ring cords made from VMQ

Some O-ring cords are made of VMQ, or silicone. This material is very flexible. Unlike the cords made from rubber compounds, you do not use super glue to join the ends of this type of cord. You need a special silicone glue for this. In addition, VMQ precision cords are resistant to both low (-60°C) and high (+200°C) temperatures.

  • O-ring cords made from CR

A few O-ring cords are made of CR, or neoprene. This is a synthetic rubber with good mechanical properties. For example, CR is a very elastic material. It is also highly resistant to oils and chemicals.

Do you need an O-ring cord that meets extremely tight tolerances? If so, choose a precision cord from ERIKS. This product complies with the ISO3302-1 standard and is even better than a class E1 product.

Vulc-O-rings for static applications

If you do not need an O-ring immediately, you can also send us an enquiry for Vulc-O-rings made to a specific size. Vulc-O-rings are O-rings that are also made from a round cord, but with a vulcanised joint (rather than glued ends). This keeps the joint flexible (and avoids hardening due to dried glue). ERIKS offers Vulc-O-rings in both very small and extremely large sizes.

When do I use an O-ring cord instead of an O-ring?

You use an O-ring cord in two situations:

  • If you cannot fit an O-ring, an O-ring cord is a good alternative. Because it is a cord (and not a closed seal), it can be more easily placed in an application.
  • If you do not have an O-ring in stock, but you need a new one quickly, an O-ring cord can be a useful solution. Because you can easily construct a new O-ring with this cord.

Which type of glue do I use for the different O-ring cord materials?

For most O-ring cords, you use a strong super glue, such as Sicomet 8300. VMQ (silicone) O-ring cords are an exception. The ends of this product must be stuck together with a special silicone glue, for example Omnivisc 1050.

Is a glued cord or Vulc-O ring suitable for my application?

Glued O-ring cords are only suitable for sealing in static applications where they are not subjected to pressure. Vulc-O-rings are also suitable for applications where there is some pressure. Normal O-rings are often the best option, but you can use an O-ring cord or a Vulc-O-ring as an alternative if you need a solution quickly, have a restricted budget or require a special size.

Ordering o-ring cords at ERIKS

What prices does ERIKS charge for O-ring cords?

The price of our O-ring cords is shown on the product pages. If the price is not immediately visible, it will be displayed after you have logged in.

What delivery time does ERIKS offer for O-ring cords?

The delivery time for a specific O-ring cord is indicated on the page for that product. If you need your O-ring cord faster, we advise you to choose a suitable alternative. You have three options:

  • Choose a slightly different size that also works in your application. Use the O-ring selector for this.
  • Choose a different material that also works in your application.
