Fabric-reinforced oil seals

A standard oil seal is sometimes not up to the job in heavy-duty industrial applications. In this case, you choose a robust fabric-reinforced oil seal. This seal consists of a rubber sealing lip and a rubber outer jacket that incorporates a fabric reinforcement (often cotton). Because of this, the properties and dimensions of fabric-reinforced oil seals differ from those of standard oil seals. Mounting is trickier because you have to clamp these products in a special groove with a cover plate. If you want to purchase a fabric-reinforced oil seal, you can choose between an NBR/fabric combination or an FKM/fabric combination.

When purchasing a fabric-reinforced oil seal, you must always consider the shape and size, and the material used for the product.

Fabric-reinforced oil seal types

ERIKS offers five different designs of fabric-reinforced oil seal. The robust shaft seals often feature lubrication grooves. This feature keeps the medium in the right place in your application and ensures better lubrication distribution. It also allows installation of multiple fabric-reinforced oil seals in a serial arrangement.

Fabric-reinforced oil seals cannot be simply inserted in a groove, they need to be clamped in place. To make assembly easier, you can purchase fabric-reinforced oil seals as a split ring. You then join the ends together in the groove to effect a seal. For extra security, you can weld or glue the ends together with a special tool. After doing so, you tighten up the cover plate to clamp the product in the same groove and prevent it from shifting.

Fabric-reinforced oil seal dimensions

Fabric-reinforced oil seals often have a large circumference. You buy them in the standard sizes or you can have custom products made at ERIKS. For custom sizes, please contact us via the enquiry form. The sizes of the fabric-reinforced oil seals are metric.

Fabric-reinforced oil seal materials

Each fabric-reinforced oil seal consists of (1) a rubber material and (2) a fabric. Unlike standard oil seals, rubber fabric-reinforced oil seals do not include a metal insert. This is because they are sturdy enough on their own. A summary of the most popular materials used for producing these rotary shaft seals, such as NBR, FKM and cotton, is included below.

  • NBR

Many sealing lips are made of NBR. This rubber material is ideal for sealing hydraulic oils or lubricating oils. NBR on the other hand is not very resistant to UV radiation and high temperatures (above +120°C).

  • FKM

An FKM sealing lip is ideal for applications involving high temperatures. This material withstands temperatures up to +200°C. Furthermore, the standard compounds are resistant to many strong acids and bases, but not to hot water or steam. Only a few special FKM compounds are suitable for applications that involve unusually low temperatures (-40°C or lower).

  • Woven fabric

The woven fabric gives a fabric-reinforced oil seal its strength. The fabric is often cotton. During production, the rubber material is dissolved in a solvent and infused into the fabric. The solvent is then allowed to evaporate and the fabric/rubber material is formed into the desired shape. The sealing lip is vulcanised as the final step. The result is a robust and resistant fabric-reinforced oil seal, which permanently retains its shape.

Ordering fabric-reinforced oil seals at ERIKS

How do I install a fabric-reinforced oil seal in my application?

A fabric-reinforced oil seal generally requires the presence of a special groove in your application. You then place the fabric-reinforced oil seal in that groove and you clamp it in place with a cover plate to prevent shifting.

If you use a split design of oil seal, you join up the ends of the fabric-reinforced oil seal in the application (in the groove). You can also weld or glue the ends together prior to assembly with a special tool. ERIKS will be happy to help with this. If you need our advice, please contact us via the enquiry form.

What prices does ERIKS charge for fabric-reinforced oil seals?

The price of our fabric-reinforced oil seals is shown on the product pages. If the price is not immediately visible, it will be displayed after you have logged in.

What delivery times does ERIKS offer for fabric-reinforced oil seals?

The delivery time for a specific fabric-reinforced oil seal is indicated on the page for that product. If you require a product faster, choose a different material that also works in your application.
